Chief Evangelist Strategic Alliances, Knowit

I am an AWS Community Hero and AWS Ambassador representing Nordics and Finland. I am an organizer in multiple Nordic user groups and an establishing member of AWS Community Day Nordics. I work as Chief Evangelist at Knowit, an AWS Premier Partner.

Today, sustainability is a more important topic than ever. It impacts us—and will continue to do so for decades to come. Changes in regulation and compliance will force this shift upon every organization, eventually, and the forerunners will have the advantage. Sustainability is not only about the environment, but also about the economic and social aspects of it, like discussing the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

My intention is to give you different aspects and vantage points, show you how to increase your knowledge in the sustainability domain through the cloud lens, and help you see how to utilize AWS services to optimize and transform your business to reach sustainability targets.

As much it is about doing things right, in this context, it also about doing the right thing.

Breakout sessions

TNC216 | Are you well-architected?

Your baseline for understanding where your architecture is starts with the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Sustainability was added as the sixth pillar to the framework at re:Invent 2021 and has since been considered as standard to include in the consideration of your architecture maturity.

SUS302 | Sustainable architecture: Past, present, and future

Take the sustainability approach one step up by driving impact through visibility to sustainability metrics. Only then can the teams start self-steering and take action on the data.

IMP103 | Sustainable and responsible AI from theory to practice

The latest advancements in AI do not come without their own sustainability implications—both in energy intensity and ethics. This breakout session should give you some fundamental thoughts on the subject.

IMP202 | Innovating for scientific discovery and health equity with AI/ML

AI has the power to redefine, for example, how affordable medical services and research can be at scale in the future when supporting the human medical staff to make better and faster diagnoses and decisions. This will have huge impact on social equity and equality in underprivileged communities around the globe.

IMP102 | Driving social impact through AWS builders and initiatives

The bigger theme of sustainability includes being a responsible company. While not tech-oriented, this session discusses the various DEI aspects at play within AWS.

SUS303 | Measuring sustainability optimization of cloud workloads

The first step to understanding the impact of sustainability is to quantify it by measuring it in numeric values. Then, you can understand if the changes you make are positive or negative to that baseline. This chalk talk covers the basic tools to start gathering insights.

Workshops

SUP301 | Continuous cost and sustainability optimization

In many cases, the first steps of sustainability start from being cost-conscious—simply because if you spend less, you have less resources, and thus, you have less emissions you are contributing. This is not, of course, the full picture, but it is a useful and practical place to start your optimization journey. And in workshop format, you can tinker with the concepts hands-on.

SUS201 | Using Amazon SageMaker, AutoGluon, and ASDI to predict air quality

In this workshop, you can use real data from the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative in conjunction with building a SageMaker model. This case could serve as an inspiration to include similar methodology and data to your business-facing application to drive sustainability impact with the same or similar datasets as input data.

ARC204 | Sustainability: Measure, optimize, and improve costs

In this workshop, the sustainability approach will be examined from an architectural-design angle, including the choices that impact sustainability and understanding the decisions and their tradeoffs.
