Sustainability at re:Invent

In line with Amazon’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon by 2040 and be on a path to 100% renewable energy by 2025, as well as become the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, AWS is focusing on sustainability for re:Invent 2021.

AWS is committed to delivering an exceptional experience, including great sustainability content at re:Invent, while reducing our environmental impact and supporting programs that benefit local communities.

This year, AWS customers will be sharing their stories around carbon emissions, water management, and waste reduction, and attendees can participate in an all-day coding event for builders to solve sustainability-related technical challenges.

At the same time, we are making re:Invent more sustainable by again focusing efforts on food donations, reducing meal and material waste, and on donation and recycling options for conference materials. We are also working with Fill it Forward to support charity: water in providing access to clean water for children and families globally while reducing waste from single-use cups and plastic bags.

How to participate

Take part at re:Invent

Code Green! Hackathon

Code Green! is an all-day coding event for builders to solve a sustainability-related technical challenge. Entries will leverage sustainability data available in the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI) or AWS Data Exchange. In the spirit of collaborating to help solve the global climate crisis, all submitted code will be open source. In this hackathon, attendees will learn from one another, gain hands-on AWS experience, and build functioning prototypes to address relevant sustainability challenges. For attendees seeking a more hands-on and guided opportunity, there will also be a workshop to learn more about using ASDI with AWS.

Log in to the attendee portal to reserve a seat in Code Green! (session ID HJS304).

Sustainability Attendee Guide

Check out the Sustainability Attendee Guide and reserve your seat in the breakout sessions, interactive sessions, and additional activities that will help answer your sustainability business challenges. Learn how organizations are building solutions to support their sustainability goals, how AWS continues to innovate on sustainability across our infrastructure, and how builders can accelerate the sustainability of their workloads through optimization and informed architecture patterns.

Fill it up and Fill it Forward

Reduce waste from single-use plastic and help fund clean water projects by bringing a reusable water bottle or grabbing a reusable tote bag in the Expo and participating in our Fill it up and Fill it Forward program. Download the Fill it Forward app, attach the re:Invent-provided bar code sticker to your bottle, and scan the tag each time you refill your reusable bottle at hydration stations across the re:Invent campus. Do the same with your Expo tote bag each time you refill. For more information, visit Give Back.

Meal programs

Our meal programs are designed to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Join in by disposing of your compostable, recyclable, and landfill meal items in the proper containers. Have questions on what goes where? Check out the signage or ask our re:Invent ambassadors.

Three Square Food Bank

AWS is donating unserved food from re:Invent, including hot meals and snacks, to Three Square Food Bank and other local nonprofits. Three Square Food Bank has been providing wholesome food to hungry people in southern Nevada since 2007.

Donate SWAG

Donate SWAG that won’t fit in your luggage. Donation bins are near transportation locations and exits across the re:Invent campus. Simply place your swag in these bins, and it will be donated to nonprofit organizations that serve local communities.

Transportation

Take the re:Invent shuttles or follow the walking paths between re:Invent venues rather than driving, taking a cab, or using a rideshare program to get around.
