Sessions

At its core, AWS re:Invent is a learning conference, bringing together AWS users of all skill levels to connect, collaborate and learn about AWS. You can choose from 200 breakout sessions covering a broad range of topics and technical depth. You can attend introductory sessions on new AWS services, find tips and tricks sessions, or participate in sessions that go deep into architecture and code. All sessions will be delivered by subject matter experts, AWS engineers, and Solutions Architects or expert customers who can share their real world experiences and lessons learned.


Track Descriptions

  • Advertising Technology
  • Advertising Technology presents various technical challenges, in terms of low latency access to data, analysis of data at scale, and the ability to scale up and down to accommodate volume fluctuations. This track will teach you about highly-flexible AWS services, such as Amazon DynamoDB, Redshift and CloudFront, which enable customers to have the resources they need and release them when they are no longer required.
  • Application Deployment & Management
  • The Application Deployment & Management track is targeted at developers, administrators, and DevOps teams. These sessions will provide deep technical coverage of AWS services including OpsWorks, Elastic Beanstalk, and CloudFormation. Sessions will feature demos, code samples, and real world customer use cases focused on application deployment, continuous integration, resource provisioning and configuration design patterns, cost tracking and optimization, and data collection and transformation.
  • Architecture
  • Architecting cloud-based applications presents new opportunities and challenges. The Architecture track will help both novice and advanced cloud architects reimagine their IT perspective and leverage AWS to design highly available, performant and cost effective solutions. Whether you are deploying new workloads, migrating existing applications, or optimizing your existing Cloud infrastructure, these sessions will help you re:Think availability, cost, operations, service management, hybrid architectures, and more.
  • Archive, Backup & Disaster Recovery
  • The Archive, Backup and Disaster Recovery track targets IT Directors, IT Storage Administrators and Developers, and Disaster Recovery Planners and Administrators. These sessions will give you insights to optimize your archive, backup and disaster recovery solutions on AWS, as well as how to leverage AWS storage tiers to implement secure, scalable solutions and reduce costs. These sessions will present technical information, best practices and use cases based on AWS services including EC2, EBS, S3, Glacier, and Storage Gateway.
  • Big Data & HPC
  • Big data is being used to transform businesses, increase efficiency, and drive innovation. The AWS Cloud has a comprehensive portfolio of big data and HPC services to accelerate and automate how you put data to work in your organization. In the Big Data & HPC track, you will hear from experts in the data analytics, data warehouse, big data, and high performance computation fields share their AWS success stories. The sessions will provide best practices, architectural design patterns, and in-depth discussions of Hadoop, Elastic MapReduce, Redshift, Kinesis, Data Pipeline, and S3.
  • Business Applications
  • Today, companies of all sizes are running traditional business software in the cloud to allow for greater flexibility, scalability, and cost savings. In this track we’ll cover how to run common business applications like SharePoint, Exchange, Oracle, SAP, and others on AWS. We will show you how to extend your datacenter into the cloud and dive into the architectural and security best practices to ensure a safer and more performant set of business applications in the cloud.
  • Developer Tools & SDKs
  • This track is for developers wanting to learn the best practices for building cloud applications. AWS and the community provide a variety of developer tools and a collection of SDKs across many programming languages. The engineers who build the AWS tools will demonstrate how to optimize your applications using our SDKs, and increase your productivity using our toolkits and command line interfaces. You will also see how tools from our ecosystem can help improve your cloud development experience.
  • Education
  • Education is undergoing a radical shift, with technology enabling new methods of content delivery, new business models for educational institutions, new roles for educators and students, and more efficient support of research analysis and business systems in universities. AWS invites technologists, business leaders and researchers from higher education, K12 institutions and education technology companies to share best practices and breakthrough ideas that can help to accelerate this transformation to the future state of education.
  • Enterprise Adoption
  • Making the decision to deploy applications to the cloud involves more than implementing a new architecture or development process. The cloud is able to open up new business areas, economics, and customer solutions. This track is for technical managers, executives, and anyone interested in how the cloud can bring business units and IT closer together. We will explore how to select the projects for cloud, how cloud can change your economics, and how to work through the change management components of the shift. We’ll hear from customers who have had transformational success by moving workloads to AWS, as well as subject matter experts from AWS Support and AWS Professional Services.
  • Financial Services
  • The Financial Services track will offer sessions that explore the unique challenges of this industry and how AWS can be used to meet its changing needs. These sessions will highlight common use cases and the rigorous security and compliance standards required for financial institutions. You will hear from experienced AWS customers that have implemented AWS solutions to respond to the fluctuating, often unpredictable demands of the financial services sector.
  • Gaming
  • Mobile, AAA, and MMO game developers alike are leveraging AWS to deliver compelling experiences for their games. In this track, you’ll learn which AWS services are most relevant for gaming, to help you quickly develop a game backend that can scale from 1,000 to 1,000,000 players. We will cover common features such as leaderboards, game analytics, asynchronous gameplay, online multiplayer servers, multi-region deployments, and cloud streaming. You’ll hear from real world game companies that are using AWS to power their games, who will share best practices and lessons learned. We will also highlight services from the Amazon AppStore that can help you monetize your game, as well as emerging trends in gaming we’re seeing.
  • Healthcare & Life Sciences
  • Faced with decreasing budgets, increased service demands, and new regulations, the Healthcare and Life Sciences industries are required to evolve and rethink how data is stored, analyzed and shared. Come hear how customers are successfully leveraging AWS to improve security & performance, increase collaboration, and reduce operating costs, as they work to improve the overall quality of care and resulting patient outcomes. We will share best practices for building and maintaining HIPAA-compliant applications, running GxP workloads in the cloud, and connecting disparate sets of data to drive meaningful new insights.
  • Media Production & Distribution
  • Whether you are a studio, broadcaster, OTT provider, or a solution provider who works with these companies, media production and distribution requires IT agility to manage the ever-increasing complexity of media workflows. The Media Production & Distribution track will dive into best practices and architectures being used to ingest, store, process, deliver, and manage media production and distribution workflows in the AWS Cloud in secure and scalable ways. Hear from AWS and media industry experts on how the AWS Cloud is being leveraged to address these IT needs.
  • Mobile & Connnected Devices
  • The pace of innovation in apps for mobile and connected devices isn’t slowing down any time soon. Whether you are a mobile developer topping the charts in the app store, a connected device solution builder, or a business trying to be “Mobile-first”, the cloud is a critical part of your solution, enabling you to build fast and scale easily. The Mobile & Connnected Devices track will help you understand AWS' latest portfolio of mobile optimized services as well as how to leverage the full power of the AWS Cloud Platform offering. We’ll have examples from real world companies that have already used AWS to power their mobile apps to share best practices and lessons learned.
  • Performance
  • Maximize the potential of your infrastructure. The Performance track will feature sessions on optimizing and architecting solutions on AWS to enable you to get the most from your cloud infrastructure. Learn best practices, hear from performance experts, and discover which services you need for the ideal performance at scale. From networking to storage, instance scaling to database operation, you can gain insights on using AWS tools and services that will give you the performance you need for your business to thrive.
  • Security
  • Security is one of AWS’ top priorities and it should be yours too. By attending sessions in the Security track you will gain a greater understanding of the shared responsibility model for cloud security. We’ll share details about the security capabilities and features of the AWS Cloud, and how to tailor them to meet your business objectives and compliance requirements. Hear directly from fellow customers who have leveraged AWS’ secure platform to build business critical appliances and services.
  • Services Deep Dive
  • The AWS Services Deep Dive track is a collection of sessions designed for expert-level users. These sessions feature both AWS customers and some of the AWS technical experts who build services such as Amazon EC2, Auto Scaling, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon S3, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon Kinesis, to name a few. Sessions in this track assume you already have a strong knowledge of AWS technologies and will go deep on the services, covering best practices, lessons learned, and tips and tricks for getting the most out of the technology.
  • Services Overview
  • This track is designed for users brand new to AWS products and solutions. These sessions will break down the fundamentals of AWS technology offerings, providing a walk-through of the core products and introduce concepts on how they work together. These sessions will act as building blocks, helping to enhance your re:Invent experience as someone new to AWS.
  • Spotlight
  • The Spotlight track will feature speakers from AWS leadership, cloud engineering and other visionaries in the industry. Sessions will cover hot topics that span a variety of AWS services and will be sure to interest expert customers and new customers alike.
  • Websites
  • Your website is the heart of your online presence. This track will help you learn more about how to get the most out of your website hosted on AWS. Sessions will focus on the best ways to design your website for high scalability, high availability, low latency, continuous deployment, and much more. You can hear from customers who run high-scale and highly available websites how they have designed their architectures. Plus, we’ll go deep on technical details on critical services to help you get the most out of your website running on AWS.

Session Levels

Introductory - "I'm new to this."
Introductory sessions are designed to give an overview of the AWS service or feature with the assumption that attendees are new to the topic. These sessions highlight basic use cases, features, functions, and benefits.
Advanced - "I get it and want to learn more."
Advanced sessions will dive deeper into the topic. Presenters assume the audience is familiar with the topic but may or may not have direct experience implementing a similar solution. Code may be shared but will not be the primary focus of the session.
Expert - "I live and breathe this stuff."
Expert sessions are for customers who are familiar with the topic and have implemented a solution on their own already. Presenters will spend much of the session on code, covering best practices, advanced tricks, and future developments in the technology.
