Attendee guide: Newbies

This guide is for first-time AWS re:Invent attendees and for those who want to get more out of their conference experience.

As an AWS Community Hero and six-time re:Invent attendee, I know the conference can be overwhelming. In four days, you might try to attend 50 sessions, spending dozens of hours optimizing your schedule. Or you could take a more relaxed approach and perhaps get more out of the conference.

If you are new to the cloud, consider a broad mix of 200-level sessions and chalk talks to give you a foundation to build on. Later in the week, try a 300-level session to stretch yourself.

If you’re cloud savvy but new to re:Invent, think about doing a deep dive or two in areas you know and perhaps attending a few 200- or 300-level sessions on topics you’re unfamiliar with.

Consider a mix of sessions about higher- and lower-level services (IAM, Amazon CloudWatch, and Amazon VPC vs. Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon ECS, and AWS Lambda).

General guidance

Advice to enhance your experience

Getting your badge at the airport is usually much quicker than going through the registration lines at the main hotels.

If you want to ask questions, chalk talks are your best bet since they’re interactive and allow for deeper discussion. They are not recorded, while breakout sessions are.

The “hallway track,” where you talk to people waiting in various lines is often a highlight, but if you’re an introvert watch out for “over-peopling!”

Leave plenty of time to wander the Expo, wear comfortable shoes, and stay hydrated. A backup power brick for your phone is always a good idea.

Closing thoughts

If you are new to re:Invent, take the time to step back and absorb the energy of being with 50,000 of your closest friends all celebrating the cool things they’re doing with smart technology. And . . . take time to decompress, even the most extraverted among us can get “over-peopled.” Give yourself permission to skip an event and take a nap, and remember to hydrate!
