As software engineers, we know how good development tools drive teams to get the most out of the cloud. They facilitate integrations with AWS, make deployments faster and less painful, and simplify development processes.

In this guide, we cherry-picked all the sessions we would love to attend. So, the choices might fit different levels, but most importantly, all these sessions address daily challenges.

We are passionate about using the right tools and are always looking to remove manual steps. Also, we want to use abstractions that can make us more productive and automations that allow us to deliver better products, in less time, more securely and reliably.

Wow, that’s a lot of quality attributes! But, hey, we’re at AWS re:Invent 2022, and there is no better place to look for it. Come with us and discover how AWS dev tools can help you to develop and deliver better software!

Breakout sessions

Building real-world serverless applications with AWS SAM

We’re amazed at how AWS SAM has evolved over the last few years to become a first-class choice for serverless application development. This is a good session to get an overview; if you’re on the serverless journey, it's a must-see.

How to reuse patterns when developing infrastructure as code

Is your IaC code full of copied snippets? We’ve been there as well! So, don’t miss this session, and get ready to refactor this code. Bonus: United Airlines folks are going to be there sharing their experience.

Take these open-source tools on your AWS adventure

This session is really fancy! We hope to come out of this session with many new things to try. Probably the best session to attend if you want to meet us.

What’s new for frontend web and mobile developers with AWS Amplify

AWS Amplify is another service that we follow closely and pay attention to (in other words, we’re huge fans), as it allows developers to build full-stack applications using abstractions that increase productivity.

Building on AWS with AWS tools, services, and SDKs

We love AWS CLI and SDKs. This session is an opportunity to dive into the AWS CLI and SDKs and understand how these tools can empower teams and accelerate software development on AWS.

Building observable applications with OpenTelemetry

This session promises to be interesting. How about taking an application that uses containers and AWS Lambda functions and making it observable using AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry?

Learn more

Governance and security with infrastructure as code

Great session to learn how AWS CloudFormation and AWS CDK can be used in regulated environments while enforcing security controls. See how to catch issues early with cdk-nag, validate pipelines with cfn-guard, and protect your accounts from unintended changes with CloudFormation hooks.

How to monitor applications across multiple accounts

If you’re not using a multi-account architecture, there is a good chance you will be soon. Monitoring applications across multiple accounts is a challenge! In this session, see how to do this centrally using AWS observability services.

Chalk talks

Provisioning, automating and orchestrating IaC on AWS

IaC on AWS: Knowing how to choose the right tools for each type of job is more than halfway there. Join this chalk talk to learn more about the different options on AWS. Remember to bring your questions!

Learn more

Zero-downtime deployment strategies

Zero-downtime deployment strategies using AWS CodeDeploy, AWS CloudFormation, and the AWS CDK. This is a great chalk talk if you want to get an overview and ask questions about tools, in-place updates, blue/green deployments, and more.

Visualizing AWS Config and Amazon CloudWatch usage and costs

10 out of 10 customers ask us for better solutions to visualize Amazon CloudWatch and AWS Config costs. This is a great session to help you figure out how to tackle this challenge.

Implementing DevSecOps pipelines with compliance in mind

It’s not easy to bring security to pipelines—especially when we have acronyms like SCA, SAST, or DAST. This chalk talk is going to be an amazing opportunity to ask about challenges and solutions.

The evolution of CI/CD on AWS

Great chalk talk to learn about the evolution of CI/CD services since the release of AWS CodeBuild in 2016. As usual, bring your questions!

Workshops

AWS serverless developer experience: A day in the life of a developer

We love to learn by doing, so how about getting your hands dirty with the AWS SAM and AWS SAM CLI in this workshop? Bring your laptop and get ready for hands-on learning.

Learn more

Continuous integration and delivery on AWS

Join this workshop to learn how to do CI/CD using AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodePipeline, and AWS CodeDeploy. These are what we call building blocks. Reminder: Bring your laptop.

Learn more

Implementing release management strategies for CI/CD

This time, we’re going to copy from the abstract: “Learn about creating CI/CD pipelines using infrastructure as code and AWS services.” Again, another great workshop to join, and as usual, bring your laptop.

Learn more

Hands-on experience with AWS observability services

At this point, you might have noticed that we love workshops! On this one, you can get your hands dirty with services like Amazon CloudWatch, AWS X-Ray, Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, Amazon Managed Grafana, and AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry.

Deploy a CI/CD pipeline with Amazon CloudFront

Andy Jassy once said “There is no compression algorithm for experience,” so let’s keep learning by doing. This workshop will show not only the code deployment part but Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Route 53, and AWS Certificate Manager.

Learn more

Troubleshooting from the perimeter

Troubleshooting is a key skill that we’re constantly improving. This workshop will allow you to choose your preferred domain (compute/networking, databases, and serverless/DevOps) and improve/practice your skills using tools like Amazon CloudWatch Synthetics, AWS CloudTrail, AWS X-Ray, and Amazon DevOps Guru.

Building a monitoring strategy

In this workshop, bring your laptop and learn how to create a strategy that aligns business and operational metrics. The workshop identifies the key metrics that matter most to delivering business outcomes.

Builders’ sessions

Proactive security and compliance for infrastructure-as-code resources

Testing is also great for IaC. This builders’ session will show you how to test AWS CloudFormation templates, Kubernetes configurations, and Terraform JSON plans and configurations using CloudFormation Guard. We are looking forward to this session. Sorry, no space for a 404 pun!

Conclusion

Final thoughts

  • Chalk talks have more Q&A time than lecture time. So, if you prefer more lecture time, look for breakout sessions.
  • If you check the session catalog and you find one of these speakers: Abby Fuller, Colm MacCárthaig, Ana Cunha, Heitor Lessa, Rafael Lopes, and Vinicius Senger, go watch the session.
  • Save some time for sessions that are not yet scheduled. AWS tends to launch outstanding new features after which time additional sessions are scheduled.
  • As you can see, we really enjoy workshops. Get your hands dirty by attending at least one workshop. You can watch most sessions online but can only attend workshops in person.
  • Don’t forget the Expo hall! You can find amazing AWS Partners over there.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Talk to each other and enjoy Las Vegas!
